Many telegraph companies would fight with each other over who could own the telegraph such as the scene depicted here.

-Once the telegraph was introduced to the public, the government never purchased any of it from Morse

-No real method or process of purchasing the telegraph = the American telegraph industry became very competitive and chaotic

-There were several attempts at mitigating the confusion that pursued including cooperating with the Union during the Civil War and merging several regional firms known as the Western Union in 1866.

-Many industry critics were concerned about the high rates and limited geographical range of the telegraph.
